Huli Huli Chicken Sauce Recipe

Huli Huli Chicken Sauce

Huli Huli Chicken Sauce is a Hawaiian marinade traditionally used for grilled chicken. The term “huli” means “turn” in Hawaiian, referring to turning the chicken as it grills. The sauce is a flavorful mix of pineapple juice, soy sauce, ginger, and brown sugar.

Ingredients

Scale

    • 1 cup pineapple juice

    • 1/2 cup soy sauce

    • 1/4 cup ketchup

    • 1/4 cup brown sugar

    • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar

    • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced

    • 2 garlic cloves, minced

    • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)

    • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

Step 1: Combine the ingredients

    • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together pineapple juice, soy sauce, ketchup, and brown sugar until the sugar dissolves.

Step 2: Add the aromatics

    • Stir in rice vinegar, minced ginger, minced garlic, sesame oil (if using), and chili flakes for added heat.

Step 3: Simmer the sauce

    • Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.

Step 4: Cool and store

    • Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool completely. Use immediately or transfer to an airtight container for later use.

Step 5: Marinate or baste

    • Use the sauce to marinate chicken for at least 1 hour or baste during grilling for maximum flavor.
