whataburger spicy ketchup

Whataburger’s Spicy Ketchup is a zesty, smoky, and slightly spicy variation of traditional ketchup. It is made with vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and spices, giving it a more complex, slightly smoky flavor than regular ketchup.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Base:

  • 1 cup ketchup – The classic tomato base, providing sweetness and tang.
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar – Adds tanginess and enhances the overall flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce – Adds a deep, umami flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon water – Helps blend the ingredients smoothly.

For the Spice Blend:

  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper – Provides the signature heat (adjust for spice preference).
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika – Adds a mild smokiness to balance the spice.
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder – Gives depth to the flavor.
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder – Enhances the overall taste.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper – Adds a subtle kick of heat.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt – Helps balance all the flavors.
  • ½ teaspoon hot sauce (optional) – For extra heat, use your favorite hot sauce.
  • ½ teaspoon brown sugar (optional) – Adds a hint of sweetness to balance the spice.

Instructions

Step 1: Mix the Base Ingredients

In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon water. Stir until fully blended.

Step 2: Add the Seasonings

Add ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, ½ teaspoon smoked paprika, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon onion powder, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, ¼ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon brown sugar (if using). Stir well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 3: Adjust the Heat Level

If you prefer extra spice, add ½ teaspoon hot sauce or more cayenne pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.

Step 4: Let the Flavors Develop

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. For the best taste, let it sit overnight.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!

Use as a dipping sauce for fries, a topping for burgers and hot dogs, or as a bold base for homemade barbecue sauces.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Stir before each use for the best consistency.
